Fennel tea to support the digestive system

There are some really simple, natural and cheap ways to support the digestive system and reduce bloating after meals*

Something I recommend for this is fennel tea, which is so easy to make - no tea bags needed, just the seeds. See the benefits and how to make it below; plus extra tips to reduce bloating naturally:

Benefits of fennel tea

  • the essential oils in the seeds help to relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal lining, which can reduce gas, bloating and cramps

  • these essential oils also help to promote the secretion of digestive juices and enzymes, thereby improving the breakdown and digestion of food

  • it has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to soothe and calm the digestive system, which can help to reduce discomfort and constipation

  • includes antioxidants, nutrients and vitamins to support overall health

How to make it

  • Place 1 level tsp of organic fennel seeds in a mug and add boiling water

  • Immediately cover the top of the mug with a saucer / lid - this keeps the essential oils in the tea, instead of evapourating through the steam (these oils hold essential properties to support digestion)

  • Keep it covered for a couple of minutes to let the fennel seeds infuse in the hot water

  • Sip slowly after meals, when you’re feeling bloated or have the above symptoms

Tips

  1. Always buy organic seeds, if you can

  2. Keep these in a small pot / jar which you can pop into your bag and have ready to add to a cup of boiling water at work or away from home

  3. To support daily digestion - where you can, eat in a calm setting, away from electronic devices (laptops, phones etc). Before starting your meal take 3 deep breaths, with a longer exhale. Then take the time to chew each mouthful completely.

* If you experience persistent bloating after meals, there may be many reasons for this, and working with a Medical / Health Professional, Naturopath or Nutritional Therapist is important to identify the root cause and get the appropriate guidance and support.
